Already living in Portugal, Luiz Avellar played a series of solo concerts, showcasing his album “Contrastes”, one of them at the Thierry Riou Jazz club, in Lisbon.
He was introduced by Riou to drummer Alexandre Frazão and bassist Yuri Daniel.
This was the beginning of the Luiz Avellar Trio.
There followed a series of concerts, always based on the album “Contrastes” but featuring other tracks from Avellar’s extensive repertoire.
Given the success of the live performances of these jazzy renditions of his pieces, the trio decided to record their work.
The recordings were completed in one day.
Inspired by Leonard Bernstein, whose records included several different arrangements for the same piece, with a wide variety of instruments and possibilities, Avellar wanted to give a new atmosphere to the tracks in “Contrastes”, here, under the sign of jazz.
